Normally I have advance notice before expecting a guest. However, occasionally there are guests who just randomly call to swing by, which means getting my home ready quickly. This happens quite often since I lived in a popular location in Long Beach, so there were always friends in the neighborhood who want to visit. Here are the tips on how to get your house ready for guest quickly.
Stick to the 15-minute rule. This is something Danni and I made up when we were living together. We always wanted our home ready for any visitors in 15 minutes. This means it is okay to have a mess but don’t let it get so bad that you can’t pick it up in 15 minutes. More importantly, make sure the common areas, such as the kitchen and living room, are picked up. The way I maintain everything tidy is picking up as I move around the apartment. If I’m heading to the kitchen and I see a cup on my desk, I pick it up and put it in the sink. Or if I take off my shoes I throw it in my closet, and once I have a chance I put them in their spot. Trust me once you build this habit, it’s hard to go back.
Make sure your home is well scented. Even if your place isn’t clean, a well-scented home will make anyone ignore the unswept floor. I’m sure you’ve walked into someone’s home and suddenly feel immersed with the scent, as if you were in a spa. Aromatherapy does this. It can help relax you and put you in a good state of mind. So make sure to light candles or spray linen mist, like Airy spray, to make your home smelling like a garden.
Make sure there is always drinks and snacks in your home. Nothing screams a great host like having wine, coffee, tea, and some snacks on hand when guests come over. If your visitors feel pampered then they will enjoy their visit. If you live with a man, having a beer or hard liquor might come in handy. That is why having a stocked bar cart comes in handy.
Bonus tip – It helps to minimize your clutter. Try to keep only things you love and use. Here is an article on how to minimize (link).
