This past December, my family took a trip to NorCal to visit my dad’s brother. He lived in San Jose my entire life but recently moved to Manteca, CA. Every time I’m visiting family, I make it a point to visit a city nearby. This time I decided on Sacramento, CA. What I love about this city was the mix of the old west and modern urban city. This is a great city if you only have a few hours to visit.
The last time we visited was in 2002. We started the day in Old Town Sacramento. I forgot how old the buildings are and how it still feels like the old wild west. Then we toured the California State Capital and ended the night in Midtown. Here is a guide to Sacramento if you are visiting for a few hours.
Old Town Sacramento
This should be everyone first stop. Especially try to go early in the morning before the crowd comes. The best thing to do here is just walking around.
EAT: My family had breakfast at Fat City Bar & Café. It had options for everything and reasonably priced.
DO: Tour the city in either a carriage ride or guided tour from the Old Sacramento State Historical Museum.
TREAT: If you are in the mood for something sweet, then you must go to Danny’s Mini Donuts. They are made right on the spot and worth every calorie.
Downtown
This is the area where all the government buildings are at, including the State Capital. If you aren’t tired of walking around they have some historic buildings to check out including an art museum.
DO: Take a tour of the State Capital. This is a self-guided tour and doesn’t take long.
Midtown
To end the trip, stop by Midtown, near the downtown area. This is where all the cool cafes, restaurants, and boutiques are. If you’re anything like me this is where I like to stop by a cafe.
EAT: There are several restaurants and bars around John C. Fremont Park or, near by on R Street. A place to check out is Burgers and Brew.
CAFE: If you in the mood for a coffee break, go to Old Soul Co.on L street or check out there other locations in Sacramento.
