I have the hardest time going to sleep early so that I could wake up early. I envy those who naturally wake up at sunrise and get a head start on the day. It’s not like I sleep-in every morning but later that I wish. The problem is not going to sleep in a timely matter to get my full 8 hours. Even when I go to bed early, I can’t seem to fall asleep fast enough. This forced me to do research on ways to fall asleep fast.
Eyes
According to the sleep foundation (Link), exposure to light stimulates the nervous system and can keep you awake. To start telling your body it’s time for bed, lower your exposure to bright light. This means, turning off the electronics, like TV, cell phones, and computers, an hour before bed. Also, lowering the bedroom lights and turning on the side table lights, which tend to be dimmer and more inviting for sleep.
Smell
Even smell can keep your body alert, meaning you need to find aromas that promote sleep. Using aromatherapy to help calm your nervous system and reduce anxiety for a better night sleep. Oils like lavender and chamomile are known to decrease heart rate and put you in a relaxing state. Try aromatherapy sprays from our store Buenas Noches, and spray them on your bedsheets.
Breath
Try the 4-7-8 treating trick (Link) to help you fall asleep. As you’re lying in bed, breath through your nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds and exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds. This is great for those who tend to stress as they are trying to sleep. Studies have shown that focusing on your breathing evokes relaxation (Link).
Foods
As kids, we are told to drink warm milk before going to sleep. The reason why, is dairy promotes melatonin. Melatonin is a natural hormone, released in our blood system, which essentially tells our body it’s time to sleep. Here is a list of foods that help you fall asleep (Link).
Sweet dreams!
