Recently, I took a workshop in my local community on “how to make herbal infused products at home”. I have always been curious about making home-made herbal oils to save money and experiment with natural treatments. I’ve seen these post on Pinterest and I assumed it took to much effort to try, turns out it doesn’t. Here is how to do a DIY thyme herbal oil recipe.
So why thyme herbal oil? Most months I get severe cramps during my menstrual cycle. I decided to try a natural remedy to help relieve my pain. From my research (link) thyme oil is a great solution. Thyme helps with increasing circulation, stimulate menstrual flow, and reduce PMS symptoms. The thyme herb should never be used directly on the skin, as it may cause sensitization. When applying thyme it is best to use it from essential oils or with a carrier oil.
Items Needed:
- Thyme fresh herb 6-8 tbsp.
- Small jar or bottle
- Carrier oil (use coconut oil, jojoba, sweet almond, castor oil)
- Cheesecloth or muslin
Directions on making thyme infused oil:
- Put herb in a glass jar (sanitize jar or bottle if needed with boiling water)
- Pour oil over the herbs until the herbs are covered. Allow for 1-2 inches or centimeters, depending on the size of the jar or bottle, of oil overhead.
- Cover the jar
- Place in a sunny location for 2 weeks
- Strain out the herbs using a cheesecloth or muslin
- Store finish product in a refrigerator to avoid spoilage.
Let the carrier oil sit for a period of time, around 2 weeks, to extract the properties from the thyme plant. Take a tiny amount and rub it into your skin. If any signs of irritation or allergy, stop using the product and see a doctor. All bodies react differently to different herbs and oils.
